The Story
How NameDropAI started
I'm Owen. I'm a Houston-based consultant, and NameDropAI started because of raccoons. Bear with me.
It was 2am on a Tuesday in late June. I heard scratching in the attic โ that specific, rhythmic scratching that means something alive is up there making itself at home. My wife was not thrilled. If you've lived in Houston long enough, you know this story: the heat drives all kinds of wildlife to look for cool, dark spaces, and your attic insulation is basically a five-star resort. Could have been rats. Could have been squirrels. Turned out to be raccoons. Classic.
I did what any reasonable person does at 2am: I opened ChatGPT and typed "who should I call for raccoon removal in Houston?" It gave me two names. Confidently. Like it had sent raccoons packing a thousand times. I called the first one, they came out, they handled it, problem solved. Fine experience. But later โ because I'm a consultant and I can't leave well enough alone โ I couldn't stop thinking: why those two companies? There are dozens of wildlife removal businesses in Houston. Were those actually the best ones? Or just the most... findable by AI?
I started digging. Asked Perplexity. Asked Claude. Ran my own searches. Same 2-3 names kept surfacing everywhere. So I looked those businesses up. Nothing special โ average reviews, nothing that screamed "clearly the best in the city." But they had one thing in common: their data was everywhere. Foursquare, Bing Places, citations consistent across 30+ directories, schema markup on their sites. The works.
The businesses that weren't showing up? Some of them had 200+ Google reviews, 15 years in operation, clearly better operations. They just weren't in the right data sources. AI had barely heard of them. That's the gap. That's NameDropAI. I started it to fix exactly that problem โ for wildlife removal, HVAC, plumbing, roofing, and every other trade where the best business isn't always the one that shows up.
